History

In this section of my website, I will present my original research on local history, mainly New Bern and Craven County in North Carolina.

I was born in New Bern and have been researching local history in detail for over 30 years. I have discovered many things that I wish to bring to the attention of history lovers.

In the past, most of the published historical information on New Bern and Craven County has been somewhat elitist. The wealthy and important political figures, along with the buildings they lived and worked in, are covered extensively. I want to reveal the common man. I want to tell about the grocers, barbers, livery stable workers, the boarding houses, eating houses, and dry goods stores. I want to recreate entire streets, not just the churches and the homes of the rich and famous.

My sources include city directories, maps, newspapers, photographs, wills, deeds, and census records. I will include only images of non-copyrighted material, except for material which I have created. I retain copyright to the graphics I have drawn and the photographs I have taken.
